WEBINAR: BALANCING THE SENSORY SYSTEM

Some individuals with disabilities have trouble handling the information their senses take in—things
like sound, touch, taste, sight, smell, or body awareness. This workshop will provide families of
individuals with disabilities with information about how people’s sensory systems work, and provide
practical strategies on how to manage sensory needs in their day-to-day lives. The presenters will
also discuss ways to identify researched-based therapies for sensory needs.

PRESENTERS:
Emily Meltzer, Licensed Occupational Therapist & Research Specialist with University of Virginia’s
Supporting Transformative Autism Research (STAR) Initiative. Emily has worked clinically as an
occupational therapist in early intervention, pre-school, and outpatient mental health settings.

Rose Nevill, PhD, BCBA is an assistant professor and director of the Autism Research Core within the
University of Virginia’s STAR Initiative. She is a licensed clinical psychologist and board certified
behavior analyst.

This presentation is intended for parents and professionals who need to learn more about the special education process and how to work as a collaborative team to the benefit of the student, and not designed for those who consider themselves special education advocates.

Event: Turning 18 in Virginia
Details
** This workshop is for individuals with a Military ID only. **

Turning 18 is a big deal for all individuals. An 18-year-old is legally considered an adult in Virginia. Therefore, when your child turns 18, he/she is the person that makes legal, financial, medical, and educational decisions in his/her life. For some individuals with disabilities, this will not be an issue. Others may need support. This workshop will share basic information about things that need to be considered as your loved one turns 18.
