An 18-year-old is legally considered an adult in Virginia. Therefore, when a child turns 18, he/she is the person who makes legal, financial, medical, and educational decisions in his/her life. For some individuals with disabilities, this is not an issue. Others may need support. This workshop will share basic information about things that need to be considered as you or your loved one approaches age 18. After graduating from Virginia Tech, Tammy Burns taught 5th grade in public schools until her second son was diagnosed with autism. Changing her career path, Ms. Burns received her Master of Education in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in autism spectrum disorders from Arizona State. Since that time, she has been in many leadership positions in disability-related nonprofits and served on several local and state advocacy groups as well as advisory boards; she now works at the Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC), Virginia’s parent training center.
There is no charge to attend; however, pre-registration is required and limited to 60. Childcare is available by pre-registration only.
To pre-register, contact Jan Russell at or 703.730.3124. If requesting childcare or interpreter services, please pre-register by Wednesday, November 27, 2019.
Parking at The Arc is limited. If The Arc lot is full, exit The Arc, turn left onto Hillendale Dr. and make an immediate left into the commuter parking lot. Drive down to the opposite end and use the steps on the left to come down to The Arc. There are two entrances. Enter through the right-hand doors and make a right to the elevators or stairs on the lower level. If using childcare, please drop off your children at Muriel Humphrey (the left entrance) prior to coming to the workshop.
