VAPIRC At Work in Norfolk Public Schools

Nov 05, 2010 For PEATC and VA PIRC one of the goals for 2010 is to reach even more families and schools than last year. We had been working with all the community partners in Hampton Roads trying to open doors to do our free trainings and workshops.

One of the most significant partnerships is the work with Cheryl Bunting who is the Parent Involvement Specialist for the Compensatory Programs with Norfolk Public Schools. On Saturday October 16th, Norfolk Schools held the Fall Parent University, an annual event in which Schools, Family and Community work together to improve parent involvement in the schools. This event was a success with the presence of almost 900 parents from diverse backgrounds including; Black Americans, immigrant families from the Middle East, and this year for the first time Norfolk Schools opened a special space for the Hispanic Community. It should be noted that Hispanic families are the second largest minority in the city. PEATC’s Director of Outreach Rosalia Fajardo conducted two workshops in Spanish while PEATC VA PIRC Partnership Facilitator Roberto Quintero organized attendance of Hispanic vendors, authorities, and families making a huge impact during this day of learning and fun.

During his introduction Dr. Richard Bentley who is the new superintendent for the Norfolk Public Schools commented, “We are here today because we view you (families) as the most important partners in the education of our children”. He also said: “In Norfolk, we believe we can improve student learning by empowering parents to work with teachers and schools staff”. Dr. Bentley believes in the power of parent involvement in education. He presented Roberto Quintero with special recognition for Roberto’s efforts on behalf of families. “We’d like to thank Roberto for his job, his passion, and his time working with the Norfolk Public Schools. His love and commitment has become part of each education day in Norfolk schools.” Roberto was presented with a clock with an inscription that reads, to Roberto, thank you for all of your time to Norfolk Public Schools.
