Understanding Section 504 - Civil Rights Law
This workshop is designed to give parents and professionals a working knowledge of The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Section 504. The law is designed to eliminate discrimination on the bases of disability in any program or activity receiving federal funds. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of Section 504 and how it might ensure a student that attends a public school receives a free & appropriate public education.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Derek Flake; Community Outreach Specialist, PEATC
Derek Flake has both personal and professional experience navigating primary, secondary, and higher education in relation to disability advocacy. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Organizational Leadership from Union University and is a 2013 Volunteer Advocacy Project graduate of Vanderbilt University. Currently Derek is pursuing a Master of Science Degree in Educational Law. He is the Community Outreach Specialist for PEATC. Derek’s role involves juvenile justice as well as dads becoming more visible, valuable, and vocal in their child’s educational program.
