The Virginia Department of Education is offering the Classrooms Not Courtrooms: School Discipline and the Achievement Gap Institute at the Richmond Convention Center, July 27-28, 2016. This Institute is supporting a critical Governor’s Children’s Cabinet initiative. The focus is to transform policies and procedures, suspension and exclusionary practices to decrease racial and ethnic disproportionality in school discipline.

The keynote speaker is Kent McIntosh, Associate Director of Educational and Community Supports at the University of Oregon. He will focus on “Key Elements of Policies to Address Discipline Disproportionality” and feature seven content strands:

o Commitment to Equity
o Clear and Objective Discipline Procedures
o Removal or Reduction of Exclusionary Practices
o Alternatives to Exclusion
o Accountability for Equitable Student Outcomes
o Reducing Discipline and the Achievement Gap Through Effective Instruction
o Family Partnerships and Policy Development

Breakout sessions will include panels from across the state focusing on the above categories.

The institute is now open to all school division personnel and community partners. There is no restriction on the number of individuals from a division that may attend. Division superintendents, local school board members, elementary and secondary Principals, central office administrators and other school personnel are encouraged to attend. Please reach out to community partners such as Court Services Director, Judges, Lead Student Resource Officer and parents.

The Institute and two nights of lodging is offered at no cost to Institute participants. Lunches will be provided and an early evening recognition reception will be held on July 27th. The Secretaries of Education, Health and Human Services, and Public Safety hope you will be able to participate in this valuable professional development opportunity.
